Functional Naturopathic Support for Fatigue & Low Energy
Constantly feeling tired, struggling with low energy or waking up exhausted despite sleeping?
Discuss your fatigue and energy concerns and find out whether our approach is right for you.
Clients commonly come to see me for energy and fatigue issues. They’ve seen the GP’s, had their bloods tested; Iron, thyroid, electrolytes. All come back fine, with no explanation as to why they are feeling the way they are.
We, at Resolve health, understand there is more to fatigue and energy issues than just your iron levels, thyroid health and sleep.
Yes, these are the first things to look at when fatigue starts becoming an issue, but there is much more to investigate.
Broader physiological factors that may contribute to fatigue, including nutritional status, metabolism, sleep, stress regulation, gastrointestinal function, inflammation and immune activity. To name a few.
Fatigue & Low Energy Concerns We Support
We provide individualised naturopathic support alongside appropriate medical care for:
Persistent fatigue and unexplained low energy
Chronic fatigue and post-viral fatigue
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)
Long COVID-associated fatigue
Physical exhaustion and reduced exercise tolerance
Mental fatigue, brain fog and poor concentration
Non-restorative sleep and daytime tiredness
Stress-related fatigue and burnout
Fatigue associated with thyroid dysfunction
Iron deficiency and nutritional deficiency-related fatigue
Fatigue associated with disrupted cortisol rhythms
Fatigue associated with metabolic dysfunction
Fatigue associated with chronic inflammatory or autoimmune conditions
Fatigue associated with gastrointestinal dysfunction and malabsorption
Fatigue can arise from numerous conditions, and similar symptoms do not necessarily indicate the same underlying problem.
How We Differ
Feeling tired doesn’t necessarily mean you need more sleep or need to do less in your day. And it also doesn’t automatically mean you have a nutritional deficiency.
We address the drivers that influences how your body produces, utilizes and regulates energy. This includes metabolic function, gastrointestinal health, nutritional status, stress regulation and nervous system activity. All of which alters not only how much energy you can produce, but also how energetic you feel.
Every person is different and there is no single “fatigue protocol” or supplement that can improve your energy long term.
Instead, we investigate the different physiological factors that may be contributing to your symptoms. We identify potential blockers, nourish what is missing, restore normal physiological processes, defend where necessary and regulate systems requiring ongoing adaptation.
These phases aren’t necessarily addressed individually or in a fixed order. Depending on your presentation, multiple systems may require attention simultaneously.
BLOCKERS – Identifying What May Be Preventing Recovery
Before introducing nutritional or lifestyle interventions, we investigate factors that may prevent those interventions from being effective.
Fatigue can be influenced by underlying medical conditions, medication effects, impaired nutrient absorption, sleep disorders, breathing issues & oxygenation, chronic inflammation and disturbances in hormonal or metabolic regulation.
One very common cause of fatigue issues is iron deficiency. But many people report supplementing iron with no improvement in energy. In these cases, there is often an underlying cause preventing iron absorption and must be considered before simply being told to take iron supplements.
Identifying these barriers helps us determine which factors require attention before, or alongside, foundational treatment.
NOURISH – Establishing the Foundations for Healthy Energy Production
In all cases, we provide nourishment to the body. This is simply us making sure the body has what it needs to adapt.
Nutrient deficiencies are actually extremely common. Same for inadequate sleep, excessive stress and reduced digestive function. Even people who eat exceptional diets can be at risk of this. Our soil and farming just isn’t is what it used to be; lack of nutrients as well as chemical additives are extremely hard to avoid. Research has shown an almost 40% decrease in some nutrients from fruit and veg between the 1950s to the 1999. And that was over 20 years ago!
This raises the question, how much nourishment are we actually getting?
And this is before we consider how effective our body is in absorbing and utilizing these nutrients.
Our Nourish phase focuses on identifying and addressing these foundational needs to provide the body with the resources necessary for normal physiological function.
RESTORE – Supporting Barriers and Drainage
Healthy energy metabolism depends on more than adequate nutrient intake and absorption. We also have to consider normal barrier function and elimination pathways
You could be doing literally everything right. But if your body is struggling to eliminate waste products and prevent inflammatory chemicals entering the blood stream, fatigue can gradually build up.
I’m sure you’ve heard people say we don’t need to improve detoxification because our liver already does that 24/7. This is true, but where does the liver give some of its toxins to? – The gut! – If we don’t have adequate gut barrier function, more of it can end up back into the blood stream then normal giving your liver more work to do. And if your liver is doing more work, your body is doing more work.
This is just an example of how barrier functions are so important for energy and fatigue. Other barriers are also necessary to look into like the skin barrier, lung barrier, oral barrier etc. All of these need to be considered when assessing overall body burden.
DEFEND – Investigating Infectious and Immune Challenges
The immune system requires substantial energy to respond to infections and maintain normal immune function. And this can occur for months after an active infection.
And we also have to consider environmental immune burdens and autoimmune potentials that may go unnoticed. These can all be playing a role without you even realising.
Several seemingly benign, tiny immune challenges can slowly build up burden in the body.
Functional Blood Work for Fatigue & Low Energy
Fatigue can have multiple contributing factors, some of which may be identified through basic pathology testing using a functional medicine understanding.
Where appropriate, we work with existing pathology and GP-requested investigations to identify nutritional, metabolic or other clinically relevant abnormalities.
Ready to Understand What’s Contributing to Your Fatigue?
Whether you’re experiencing persistent exhaustion, unexplained energy crashes or fatigue that hasn’t improved despite previous treatment, there may be additional contributing factors worth investigating.
At Resolve Health Naturopathy, we take an individualised approach to understanding fatigue, looking beyond individual symptoms to assess the physiological systems involved in energy regulation.
